Story

In memory of Earl Blackburn, who departed this life on July 20, 2008. Earl was born September 16, 1928, to Eulis (York) and Samuel L. Blackburn, the youngest of 7 children. He was a dear and loving husband and father, and found great enjoyment in his devotion to his grandchildren. All that lay in the power of loving hearts and willing hands was done for his relief, death was inevitable, and, Sunday afternoon, the spirit of Earl Blackburn took flight to heaven. He was a kind and generous man and his sincere and loving personality will long be remembered and missed by all who knew him.Earl owned and operated service stations in New Castle for many years. He was an avid fisherman and shared his love of fishing with many fishing buddies. He was a member of Chicago Corner Church, Lewisville Lodge #72, F& AM, Indianapolis Valley of the Scottish Rite, and the American Legion. He served with the US Army during the Korean War, 1949 - 1952.He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rose Mary (Neal) Blackburn, 4 children, Nancy Fasel (John), of Palmetto, FL, Kathi Schroeder of Indianapolis, Tony Blackburn (Eileen) of Palmetto, FL and Heidi Houck (Scot) of Hagerstown; 12 grandchildren, Jonathan Fasel (Erica), Mark Fasel, Sally Ann Bucher (Tony), Jacob Schroeder, Ben Blackburn, Robby Blackburn, Emily Blackburn, Alex Houck, Madison Houck, Olivia Houck, Savannah Houck and Sammy Houck; 3 great-grandchildren Jaxon Fasel, Emma Fasel and Marley Bucher; 1 sister, Pauline Wools (Vern) of New Castle; 1 brother, Haskell Blackburn (Joan) of Cambridge City and several nieces and nephews.Services will be at 3:00 P.M. Thursday, July 24, in Chicago Corner Church. Pastor Paul Gearhardt will officiate. Burial will be in Lewisville Cemetery, where military graveside services will be conducted. Visitation will be after 1:00 P.M. Thursday, at the church.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salvation Army.
