Story

Howard Lumpkin, 94, of Hagerstown, passed away at his home on Sunday, November 2, 2008.

He was born near Hagerstown on March 12, 1914, the son of Elmer and Ola (Routh) Lumpkin, and resided in or near Hagerstown his entire life. He was a 1932 graduate of Hagerstown High School. Howard was employed at the Hagerstown Perfect Circle plant from 1933 until his retirement, from the engineering test lab, in 1976. He served with the U.S. Army 171st Combat Engineers from 1943 to 1946. He served as Dalton Twp. Trustee and Assessor during the 1950s. He was a member of Hagerstown First United Methodist Church and William O. Frazier Post 333, American Legion.

Howard is survived by his wife, Lena Beth (LaMar) Lumpkin, to whom he was married in 1994; a son, Roger Lumpkin; a sister, Ruth Stout (Bill); a brother, Frank Lumpkin; 3 grandchildren, Lance Lumpkin (Ami), Kyle Lumpkin (Manda) Renae Denton (Chris); 2 step-grandchildren, Jason LaMar (Nicole) and Nathan LaMar; 5 great-grandchildren, Carter Denton, Abby Lumpkin, Taylor Lumpkin, Drake LaMar and Grant LaMar and a very special friend, Andrea LaMar.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Gertrude (Davenport) Lumpkin; a brother, Harold Lumpkin and a step-son, Gregg LaMar.

Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, November 6, in Hagerstown First United Methodist Church. Rev. Sue Cartee will officiate. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery, where military graveside services will be conducted. Visitation will be after 1:00 P.M. Thursday, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Nettle Creek Senior Center
