May God comfort you with the wonderful memories that Nelson has given everyone he knew. My sons (Kyle And Cole Whalen) and myself will always remember both Nelson and his family for their love to always joking around, being with lots of family and friends. May God bless you all. Kim Whalen

A tribute to Dad was seen last night at the calling, where an estimated 2,000 well-wishers paid their respects to Dad and offered condolescences to Mom in a line of constant flow past Dad's casket that lasted over 6 hours!  How can you sum up in a few sentences the legacy Dad left behind, the love and care he poured out over his lifetime, the events, incidents, the laughs, the tears, the joys, the sorrows?  Taint easy I'll tell ya that.  Just know that Dad was a Christian, a Patriot, a Republican, a father, a grandfather, a teacher, a mentor, an EMT-Intermediate, a hunter, a fisherman, a golfer, a family man, a man of history, and a man of morals and ethics.  We'll miss you Dad!

Love, Dave

For the past 2 years, Dad and his 5 sons (Scott, Gary, Dave, Dan, Chris) went over to Lake Erie over 3 days to fish and also to shoot son golf.  We got there and Dad went to put on his shoes and lo and behold he packed 2 "right" shoes instead of the normal left-right, ha!  We had a hoot with that one, hence the picture.  Dave

I reckon it was about 4 years ago.  Dad came up to go turkey hunting with me (Dave) at Coloma, Michigan.  We didn't see anything.  We didn't hear anything.  Dad sat in the southeast corner of the property just south of Hagar Shore Road, I sat more to the southwest corner.  Being fidgety like I usually am, I sat for a while and then starting walking towards where Dad was sitting.  Knowing he wasn't gonna get anything because I am not stealth-man, I just started walking directly toward him.  BLAM!!!  Dad put the butt of the stock on the ground and the barrel toward the sky and pulled the trigger, KAPOW!  Scared the hell out of me!!!  Dad laughed and he laughed and he laughed.  That SOB 'bout made me crap my pants!  Wouldn't trade it anything.  Dave

What a loss for the world and what a gain for Heaven.  Dad was such the family man, who loved Mom and his kids, and his 18 grandchildren.  He flew Ol' Glory, trusted God, loved to fish and hunt.  He always had a good and kind thing to say to about everyone he met.  The calling last night was a real tribute, a testimony to the kind of person Dad was.  This is my estimate, but about 2,000 well-wishers went through the line to see Dad and to offer Mom and the family their condolescences.  He is so missed by everyone, one of a kind he was that's a fact.  Dad taught his kids morals, ethics, and to be just a good person, choosing right over wrong.  Dad said that "No matter what you do, whether it's stocking a shelf, sweeping a floor, operating a nuclear power plant, or running the greatest country on Earth (USA), do your best."  Novels could be written to cover Dad's life, from rabbit hunting in Fountain City to turkey hunting in Coloma, MI, from the house on Clyde Oler Road to his home on South Perry Street.  Reality spoken, this downright sucks!  Love you Dad!  And miss you a ton.  Dave
