Story

Phyllis Lambert, formerly of Hagerstown, died at The Waters of New Castle on Tuesday, July 22, after an extended illness. She was 79.Phyllis and her husband were founding members of the New York C S Lewis Society.Born to Ruby and William Wamsley on October 5, 1928, she grew up in Brownsville. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Butler University in 1948 and met her future husband, Byron Lambert, while she was there. They were married in 1949. Phyllis originally intended to teach Spanish, but worked as a legal secretary after their marriage.A staunch Republican, Phyllis campaigned for Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, David MacIntosh and Mike Pence. She volunteered at MacIntosh’s office in Muncie, as well as for Birthright in Richmond. An avid reader, she was a member of the Hagerstown Library Guild and also volunteered with the Historical Society, After her husband’s death in 2004, she resided at the Woodlands at Forest Ridge.She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Hunt (Niles); grandchildren Giles Hunt, Regina Riley (Shawn) and Rachael Hunt; 5 siblings, Lawrence Wamsley (Violet), Clayborn Wamsley (Alice), Eileen Irrgang (Raymond), Donald Wamsley (Virginia) and Marilyn Miller (Robert).Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday in Hagerstown Church of the Nazarene. Rev. Robert Fannin will officiate. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 P.M. Friday in Culberson Funeral Home, Hagerstown.Memorials may be made to Gideons International.
